Senior Somali Commander Nur Farey Killed by Uniformed Gunman Near Afgooye

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A senior Somali military commander, Colonel Nur Farey, was shot dead by a gunman wearing a military uniform near Afgooye town located southwest of the capital Mogadishu, security sources and witnesses said Saturday.

The commander of the Somali National Army’s 14th October Brigade was addressing troops in the Addow Dibille area when the assailant opened fire, according to initial reports. The attacker, who reportedly shouted a word repeatedly before shooting, was killed by security forces at the scene.

Nur Farey was a prominent figure in Somalia’s ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab militants, leading operations in the volatile Lower Shabelle region. His killing raises concerns about potential security breaches within the army, as the gunman appeared to be a soldier.

An investigation is underway to determine the motive and circumstances of the attack, a military official told Garowe Online on condition of anonymity. "This is a serious incident, and we are working to establish whether it was an isolated act or part of a broader threat," the official said.

The assassination comes amid heightened tensions in Somalia, where government forces, backed by international partners, have been battling Al-Shabaab insurgents for control of key regions. Afgooye, located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Mogadishu, has been a hotspot for clashes.

Somali authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but the incident has sparked alarm among residents and military personnel. "He was a brave leader. This is a big loss for us," said a soldier who witnessed the attack, speaking to Garowe Online.
