Somalia Pays Tribute to Ugandan Peacekeepers Killed in Helicopter Crash

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Republic of Somalia has saluted officers from the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) who died in a helicopter crash, terming them 'heroes of our nation' in a compelling condolences shared, Wednesday.

At least 5 UPDF personnel died instantly after the helicopter from Balidogle airbase crashed at Aden Adde International Airport, Mogadishu. There were only three survivors in the helicopter crash.

The helicopter, carrying eight personnel from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), crash-landed moments before touchdown, killing five on board and leaving three others severely injured, Uganda’s military spokesperson, Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, confirmed.

“The courage and commitment of these soldiers is a testament to Uganda’s enduring support for Somalia’s pursuit of peace and stability,” Somalia’s Ministry of Information said in a statement.

“We honour the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen and stand in full solidarity with the people and government of Uganda during this time of grief," Somalia added in the statement while putting the families of those who died in prayers.

Several structures were destroyed at Aden Adde International Airport. The African Union confirmed the incident while insisting that investigations into the deadly crash have begun, with results expected to be shared in the coming days.

The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) is part of the stabilisation team in the country. Ugandan troops have been deployed in Somalia for the past two decades.
