Somalia: Puntland congratulates new Jubaland parliament speaker

GAROWE, Puntland - Somalia’s northeastern Puntland state on Saturday congratulated Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman on his re-election as speaker of Jubaland parliament and his two deputies, Garowe Online reports.

The presidency released a statement commending the members of the House for electing the Speaker through a transparent process and lauded Jubaland Electoral body for peaceful, orderly elections in Kismayo on August 17.

With the election of the parliament leadership now successfully completed, Puntland expresses hope for smooth and peaceful Jubaland elections without interference on August 22, according to the statement.

In addition, Puntland has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Parliament and for the new Speaker to achieve tangible results that benefit the people of Jubaland and entire Somalia.

On the other hand, UN envoy for Somalia James Swan on behalf of the country's Int'l partners warned a serious risk that the outcome of Jubaland election will not enjoy broader support unless concerns of stakeholders are addressed.
