Somalia’s Speaker Jets Off to Algeria Amid No-Confidence Motion

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Speaker of Parliament, Aadan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), has departed for Algeria to attend an upcoming conference for Arab Parliament Speakers, as he faces a no-confidence motion filed by more than 100 MPs.

The motion, which accuses Madoobe of undermining parliamentary procedures and misusing his power, comes after a series of controversial decisions, including his role in a disputed oil deal with Turkey. The deal, passed under pressure and with limited parliamentary scrutiny, has recently sparked a scandal over allegations that 90% of revenue was allocated to Ankara.

Madoobe's absence from Parliament raises concerns that MPs may vote on the no-confidence motion in his absence, further intensifying the political crisis in the country. Several MPs have voiced their opposition to Madoobe's leadership, accusing him of losing the trust of the House and acting in the interests of the executive rather than the legislature.

The Speaker's trip to Algeria comes at a time of heightened political tensions, with the government struggling to address ongoing security challenges and governance issues. While in Algeria, Madoobe is expected to represent Somalia at the Arab Parliament Speakers' Conference, though his political future remains uncertain as the no-confidence motion looms large.

This development is likely to escalate the political struggles within the Somali government, with critics accusing the executive branch of meddling in parliamentary affairs.
