GAROWE, Puntland- The election polls to select candidates for the Upper House saw the defeat of Mohamed Saed Morgan to his running opponent on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland parliamentarians -65 MPS- has casted their votes between Botan Bare Samtar and General Morgan to secure a seat among the 11 seats quota set for Puntland in the upcoming Upper House chamber of Federal Parliament.

The result saw the victory of Samtar who secured 38 votes while his opponent General Morgan received 27 votes.

According to sources, Samtar is a businessman who resided abroad mostly and is considered new comer to the Somali politics.

The race for this particular seat comes amid controversy following Somalia’s International partners request to bar candidates who had history of violence and criminality during Somalia’s civil wars.

General Morgan and two other Upper House candidates from Jubaland and Galmudug were named in the letters that sent to the state leaders requesting to bar those candidates.

On the other hand, the Upper House elections in Jubaland and Galmudug saw the victory of those barred candidates in the polls, suggesting clear contempt of parliamentarians of both regions to the International partners’ request.

The voting for the Upper House candidates in Puntland is expected to be wrapped up later today with the candidates securing the 11 seats quota.
