Somalia: Presidential candidate Farole arrives to Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia- Former Puntland President and Senator, Abdirahman Mohamed Farole has arrived to the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Saturday, ahead of the elections of Upper House Speakers and Somali President, Garowe Online reports.

Upon arrival to Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport, Farole was warmly welcomed by government officials, Federal MPs and members of the civil society.

Speaking to the press at the Airport, presidential hopeful Farole said that he is among few other Somali politicians, who took part in the efforts to restore the country following the collapse of central government in 1991. Farole also declared that he is a candidate representing all Somali people and independent form any external influence.

“I stayed mostly in the country, but recently I visited Kampala and I didn’t meet officials there, also visited Nairobi and I didn’t meet officials, I represent the people, not pushed by other countries,” said Farole.

However, Farole noted that relationship with regional countries is important for the security and development of the region and Somalia.   

On the other hand, the presidential hopeful urged the newly sworn-in lawmakers of both Houses to tackle challenges in the country and elect a leader who can deliver governance, unity and stability.

Moreover, highlighting his campaign’s agenda, Farole said if he is elected the President he will ensure to install justice, peace, stability, good governance and development. He further noted he will bring unity in the country, giving an example during his past tenure as President of Puntland, where he picked political opponents to be part of his ministerial cabinet.

During the press conference, Farole expressed concerns to the worsening humanitarian situation in parts of the country and appealed to the people, businessmen and Somali government to provide relief aid to drought-stricken communities.

His arrival comes amid country's preparation to conclude parliamentary leadership election that will pave the way for lawmakers to vote for a new President in a date that is not yet set by the Federal Parliament.
