Somalia: Puntland President names High Court Chief Judge

GAROWE, Somalia-The President of Somalia’s Puntland Government Abdiweli Mohamed Ali has named a new Chief Judge for Supreme Court on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

Dr. Yusuf Haji Nur has taken over from outgoing Chairman of Puntland High Court Abdulkadir Ahmed Mohamud in a Presidential decree.

Puntland Parliament denied Mohamud, his deputy and three members a four-month mandate extension on July 20.

Dr. Nur became an interim President for five months in 2001 after first President late Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed tried to extend his presidential tenure. In recent years, he has been a passionate human rights advocate for vulnerable people.

Puntland President also appointed Nur Isse Mohamed as deputy Chairman, and three other members—Saed Abdi Mumin, Abdiqani Dirie Awl and Ahmed Hadi Adan.

Ali has yet to announce Constitutional Court which is a harbinger for a viable democratic process in Puntland by 2019.
