Somalia: Rifts emerge in top Puntland leadership

GAROWE, Somalia-Divisions have grown between Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and his Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Haji Omar, sources within the government have confirmed to Garowe Online.

The difference between the two men emerges amid increasing speculations over possible impeachment motion against Omar who is trying to assert indispensability for the state’s major political issues.

The Vice President has reportedly expressed non-satisfaction with the President’s moves on politics without him being involved in very critical issues.

Over a few weeks ago, some MPs met with President Ali to inform him of their intention to lodge a vote of no confidence in the Vice President, the sources privy to the brewing rift disclosed.

“It is true that some members of parliament are planning to submit no-confidence motion in the Vice President. They met with the president, but I believe that it enjoys no backing and visible substance in the house,” Puntland MP who asked not to be named said by Monday.

On October 28, 2015, Puntland Parliament Speaker Saed Hassan Shire resigned after losing confidence in parliament.

Shire was impeached in cracks with his deputies, with President Ali at the time giving green-light to proponents.
