Somalia: Suspects arrested over rare deadly attack on UN vehicle
GAROWE, Somalia, April 25, 2015 (Garowe Online)-A police commander in Somalia’s northeastern state of Puntland confirmed that security forces have arrested over a dozen in sporadic sweeps since UN bus bombing, Garowe Online reports.
Col. Ahmed Abdullahi Samatar, Nugal regional police commander Saturday told the media that suspects arrested in connection with the rare terror attack that left four UNICEF staff dead are being interrogated at police headquarters.
“The security situation is really good, and the findings of police have been handed over to the oversight committee,” said Col. Samatar, referring to the executive-level body named by Puntland Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Haji Omar in reaction at UN bus bombing.
Nugal regional police commander further noted that plans to establish community policing centers have got underway.
Last Monday, Al Shabaab suicide bomber killed four UNICEF workers-two Kenyans, Ugandan and Afghan- and two Somali body guards in bus in front of UN compound in the state capital of Garowe.
Ever since, Puntland government has been tightening security in and around UN facilities and other key installations across the stable state.
Al Shabaab stepped up attacks on pre-planned targets in the Gulf of Aden port city of Bossaso, launching raid on police compound a week ago today.
