BOSASO, Somalia – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that it carried out an airstrike in Somalia’s Puntland state, targeting fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS).

In a statement released Saturday, AFRICOM detailed that the strike took place on April 17 in a mountainous area located approximately 30 miles southeast of the port city of Bosaso, in the Bari region. This operation comes as U.S. air operations in Somalia continue to intensify.

In line with a policy adopted last year regarding the disclosure of operational details, the command did not provide specific casualty figures or damage assessments.

The United States maintains a consistent presence in Somali airspace, conducting strikes against both ISIS and al-Shabaab militants to support the Somali federal government and the Federal States in their counter-terrorism efforts.

This latest strike in the north coincides with ongoing U.S. aerial support in southern Somalia, where intense ground fighting has escalated in recent weeks between government forces and al-Shabaab insurgents.
