MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali government forces, backed by Ugandan troops serving under the African Union Stabilization Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), have taken full control of the strategic town of Bariire in the Lower Shabelle region after a week of intense fighting, the Somali defence ministry said on Friday.

The joint operation, described by officials as carefully coordinated, targeted al-Shabaab fighters who had long maintained a presence in Bariire and surrounding areas.

More than 100 militants were killed in the offensive and several others captured, according to Somali military officials. Weapons and military supplies were also recovered during the operation.

“Clean-up operations are now underway in the town and nearby villages to secure the area and prevent any regrouping of militants,” the ministry said in a statement. It added that the offensive was part of ongoing efforts to eliminate extremist threats and stabilize the country.

The ministry praised the bravery of Somali forces and the support of international partners, particularly AUSSOM. A fuller account of the operation will be provided once intelligence gathering and field reports are completed, it said.

Bariire, located in southern Somalia, 50Kms southwest of the capital, has long been used by al-Shabaab as a key base of operations. Its capture marks a significant setback for the al Qaeda-linked group and could pave the way for further military gains in the region.
