ADDIS ABABA  - The African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Saturday endorsed an agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia aimed at resolving a dispute over a port deal with Somaliland, the breakaway region of Somalia.

The agreement, which emerged from talks in Turkey, seeks to ease tensions that escalated after Ethiopia signed a maritime agreement with Somaliland on Jan. 1, 2024, causing diplomatic fallout as Somalia does not recognize Somaliland's independence.

According to a joint statement, the AU praised Ethiopia and Somalia for their "commitment to dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution," considering the deal an "important act" for regional stability. IGAD echoed this sentiment, labeling the agreement an "important step" that shows commitment to resolving bilateral issues peacefully.

The terms of the new accord include initiating technical negotiations by the end of February to define Ethiopia's maritime access under Somalia's sovereignty, potentially enhancing cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

Both organizations urged swift implementation of the agreement, emphasizing its role in maintaining peace and boosting economic links in a region known for conflict.

Somaliland has yet to clarify if this new arrangement affects its earlier memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia, asserting that their previous agreement still stands.

The deal follows extensive international mediation, with Turkey playing a significant role. It is anticipated to reduce the risk of further conflict in the area, with both the AU and IGAD committing to ongoing support for dialogue and cooperation.
