Elders: We will support crackdown against Al-Shabaab in Somalia

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia - Traditional elders have pledged support to the ongoing crackdown against Al-Shabaab militants across Somalia, noting the essence of clan mobilization and participation from community leaders and locals through the sharing of intelligence and timely information.

At Galmadug, the elders reaffirmed their support towards counterterrorism measures, adding that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made tremendous milestones in uniting the country against terrorism. Galmadug has been the epicenter of the crackdown against Al-Shabaab.

In his speech, Hassan Sheikh maintained that Al-Shabaab has no place in Somalia, adding that the government will not have time to engage the group until the operation is concluded. He thanked locals for their commitment to seize the country from the hands of Al-Shabaab militants.

Already, a number of clans have been mobilized with the military now aiming at combing Galmadug and HirShabelle states where the first phase of operations against Al-Shabaab was anchored. Already, Al-Shabaab has started retreating following intensified military activities.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also hinted at the second phase of operations against the Al-Shabaab, noting that activities will be centered around Jubaland and Southwest states. Soldiers from Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia will be participating in the operation.

Jubaland said recently that the operation was welcome, adding that regional troops will be working closely with those in the federal government to restore dignity and diligence within Somalia. Al-Shabaab militants have been carrying out several sporadic retaliatory attacks against security forces.

Recently, it emerged that a number of Al-Shabaab operatives have crossed over to Kenya following intensive military operations in Kenya. However, Kenya has also mobilized security agents along the border, making it difficult for the militants to penetrate the porous border in recent times.
