MOGADISHU, Somalia — Five prisoners and three soldiers were killed Saturday in a failed attempt by some inmates to break out of a prison in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, a corrections officer said.

The prisoners, reportedly members of the Al-Shabaab jihadist group, had somehow managed to obtain small arms and hand grenades within the facility. They then engaged in a fierce firefight with guards, who were taken by surprise by the sudden and well-coordinated assault.

Speaking after the incident was over, Col. Abdikani Khalaf, spokesman for the Somali army's custodial corps, told reporters that the situation had now returned to normal. However, the cost was high, with 21 people wounded in the exchange of fire.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in Somalia, particularly in dealing with the threat posed by militant groups like Al-Shabaab. The prison break attempt serves as a stark reminder of the constant security threats faced by the country, and the need for continued vigilance and security measures to prevent such events from occurring in the future.

The Somali government has been battling Al-Shabaab for years, and the group has been responsible for numerous attacks and bombings across the country. Despite efforts to weaken the group, Al-Shabaab continues to pose a significant threat to Somalia's security and stability.

The incident also highlights the challenges faced by the Somali prison system, which has been criticized for its poor conditions and lack of security. The ability of prisoners to obtain weapons and launch a coordinated attack raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the prison's security measures.

In response to the incident, the Somali government has vowed to launch a thorough investigation and take steps to improve security in its prisons. The government has also called on the international community to provide more support in its fight against Al-Shabaab and other militant groups.
