MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 20, 2026 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to travel to Kenya for talks with regional leaders as concerns mount over an election crisis and political tensions at home, diplomatic and political sources said.

The discussions are expected to focus on security, political stability, and efforts to secure a consensus-based electoral process, amid growing calls from regional leaders for a negotiated settlement among Somali stakeholders.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Kenyan President William Ruto and other East and Central African leaders are pushing for a political agreement to avoid delays that could undermine international support for security operations in Somalia, where hundreds of regional troops remain deployed despite funding constraints.

Kenya, which has previously helped mediate disputes among Somali leaders, has emerged as a key partner for Western powers in managing security challenges across the Horn of Africa, diplomats say.

Three regional leaders are said to be pressing for a political settlement to ensure continued support for Somalia's stabilization efforts and to prevent disruptions to international assistance.

Ruto recently voiced concern over Somalia's political situation, warning that uncertainty over the expiration of federal institutions' terms could deepen instability, according to officials familiar with his remarks.

The talks in Kenya come at a time of heightened political uncertainty in Somalia, where disagreements between the federal government and opposition groups over the electoral framework have raised fears of a prolonged crisis.
