MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somalia National Army (SNA) deputy Army commander Brigadier General Madey Nurey Sheikh says the military will defeat Al-Shabaab militants by the end of June, noting that the level of preparedness is 'impressive and above the board'.

SNA soldiers have been working closely with the US Africa Command and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants. The Al-Shabaab still controls large swathes of rural central and southern regions.

According to the commander, the SNA team is ready for the final assault against Al-Shabaab, noting that many areas have already been liberated from the militants. The second phase of operations against Al-Shabaab is due to start soon.

"We will defeat Al-Shabaab within this month, June, all troops ready in frontlines, waiting for the green light to start the war," said Brigadier General Madey Nurey Sheikh, the Deputy Commander of the Somalia army.

Early last year, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud set a one-year deadline to eradicate the Al-Qaeda-linked group from the country and end 17 years of war. The president declared total 'war' against the Al-Shabaab when he assumed office for the second term.

The first phase of operations against Al-Shabaab targeted parts of Hirshabelle and Galmudug states, leaving close to 3,000 militants dead. The second phase which was due to start in Southwest and Jubaland was delayed due to logistical challenges.

Somalia has intensified the fight against the group, closing several mobile money transfer firms and bank accounts associated with the group. The country has also closed websites and social media sites propelling Al-Shabaab propaganda.

Elsewhere, authorities in Puntland state arrested three Al-Shabaab members in a planned operation last night within Bosaso, the commercial capital of Puntland. The suspected will be taken to court for trial and subsequent sentencing, officials said.
