Somalia: Beachfront attack in Mogadishu leaves 20 dead

MOGADISHU-Twenty people have been killed in a deadly siege laid to seafood and beach view restaurants overlooking the Indian Ocean in volatile Mogadishu on Thursday evening, Garowe Online reports.

National Security Minister Abdirizak Omar Mohamed has confirmed the death of 20 including children and women.

Al Shabaab gunmen broke into wedding ceremony, with witnesses seeing heavily armed men firing indiscriminately at people hanging out in beachfront restaurants popular with government officials and foreigners.

By Friday morning, Mogadishu’s Liido beach is in sobering mood unlike other buzzing Fridays.

Security forces are scattered everywhere along the main road leading to Liido.

Mohamed claimed that they’re holding Liido beach attack mastermind without elaborating more.

Former BBC Somali Service journalist Mohamed Ibrahim Moallu who is now in good condition is among the wounded.

Somali Special Forces right away came to the rescue of dozens trapped in the popular resort, survivors caught in the brazen attack told the media.
