Somalia: President Farmajo Arrives In Addis Ababa For AU Summit

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has Saturday afternoon arrived in the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa for the 32nd African Union (AU) Summit, Garowe Online reports.

The two-day Summit of Heads of State of the AU will be held with the theme ‘Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons [IDPs]: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.

In a statement, seen by Garowe Online, the Villa Somalia said the president will deliver a keynote speech on Somali refugees scattered in the neighboring countries at the AU forum by presenting his government plan to deal with this issue.

Farmajo is accompanied by several Ministers, senior government officials, and diplomats who will meet with their counterparts during their stay in Addis Ababa, according to the statement.

Somali president is expected to hold talks with African leaders on the sideline of the meeting and will discuss ways to boost relations and cooperation. He will seek support in the fight against terrorists.

Despite being ejected from key swathes of territory in the past 7 years, the Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group Al-Shabaab continue to pose threat to security in the region by launching deadly attacks in Somalia and Kenya.

The AU is a continental organization consisting of all the 55 countries on the African continent, launched in July 2002 in Durban South Africa, replacing the Organization of African Union (OAU).
