Somalia president Hassan Sheikh reorganises the army

MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reorganised the Somali National Army (SNA), a move geared towards increasing efficiency and effectiveness as the military battles Al-Shabaab on different frontlines across the country.

The SNA force is set to take over security responsibilities from the US Africa Command and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) who are engaged in the fight against Al-Shabaab. The ATMIS has started tactical withdrawal from Somalia.

While restructuring the SNA Force, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud created the SNA Special Forces Command, which was tasked with high-risk operations and counter-terrorism, led by Brigadier General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh.

The president also created the SNA Training Command, which shall focus on developing the skills and expertise of SNA personnel, led by Colonel Ahmed Isse Ahmed. The school will train officers in the Somali National Army.

Also established is the SNA Reconnaissance and Intelligence Command, which will be responsible for gathering crucial intelligence and conducting reconnaissance missions, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Nur Beeryare.

Furthermore, the SNA General Support Command was created to provide essential logistical and support services to ensure operational success, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The government has activated the fight against Al-Shabaab militants, with the Somali National Army taking the lead under the supervision of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia and the US Africa Command. The Somali National Army has undergone specialized training over the years.
