GAROWE, Somalia — In a significant counter-terrorism operation, security forces in Somalia's northeastern Federal State of Puntland intercepted five kamikaze drones believed to be intended for suicide attacks, officials announced on Monday. The drones are suspected to have been smuggled from Yemen, through Bosaso, a strategic port city on the Gulf of Aden.

According to Puntland security officials, the operation also led to the arrest of seven individuals with alleged connections to Al-Shabaab or ISIS. The suspects were apprehended while traveling on the Garowe-Galkayo road, suggesting their intended targets might have been in southern Somalia.

The Puntland Security Force (PSF), known for its counter-terrorism efforts, conducted the operation following heightened security measures in response to increased threats. "This seizure is a critical blow to the operational capabilities of terrorist groups in the region," a Puntland security official stated, emphasizing the ongoing vigilance against such threats.

The drones, identified as capable of carrying explosives, represent a new level of sophistication in the arsenal of extremist groups operating in Somalia. The use of such technology underscores the evolving tactics of these organizations, shifting from traditional ground assaults to aerial threats.

This incident comes at a time when Somalia is undergoing significant political and security transitions, including the drawdown of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and ongoing constitutional reforms. The presence of such advanced weaponry in the hands of militants highlights the challenges Somalia faces in stabilizing the region.

Puntland officials did not detail the specifics of the drones' interception or the subsequent investigation into the arrested individuals. However, sources close to the operation suggest that intelligence from both local and international partners played a crucial role in thwarting the potential attack.

The international community has been closely watching Somalia's efforts to combat terrorism, with recent Security Council discussions focusing on the need for continued support to Somalia's security forces as ATMIS prepares to transition out. This operation in Puntland could serve as a testament to the growing capability of local forces to handle sophisticated threats independently.

The arrest and seizure have sparked discussions on the need for enhanced maritime security along Somalia's coast, given the route these drones likely took from Yemen. Analysts are also examining the implications of such technology reaching terrorist groups, potentially signaling a broader regional security concern.

As investigations continue, Puntland officials welcomed the successful interception of the drones and the arrests could mark a pivotal moment in the fight against terrorism, showcasing both the threat level and the region's resolve to counter it.
