BELEDWEYNE, Somalia, August 10, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Amid joint military offensives in central and southern Somalia, Al Shabaab militants launched raid on Beledweyne central prison overnight on Sunday, Garowe Online reports.

The terror assault trigged a heavy gun-battle that lasted ‘half hour’ according to security officials in the central Somalia town, Beledweyne.

Mohamed Adey, a police commander in Hiran told the media that security forces fiercely repulsed the night raid.

“[Security] forces demonstrated professionalism in repelling the anti-peace elements. Later on, they fled and we are on manhunt,” said Adey.

Al Shabaab militants were liberated from Beledweyne in 2011, nevertheless they are still in control of fewer areas in Hiran region.

Somali government forces alongside African Union peacekeepers are conducting clean-up operations in Beledweyne’s western countryside.
