Somalia’s president leaves for Eritrea to attend summit

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A high-level delegation headed by Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Monday left the country for the Eritrean capital, Asmara, Garowe Online reports.

President Farmajo was seen off at Mogadishu airport by senior government officials and lawmakers as he jetted off to Asmara, where he will join Afwerki and Abiy Ahmed for a trilateral summit later today.

The trip by Farmajo to Eritrea is the second in just two weeks.

“The three leaders will use the summit to review and evaluate the effectiveness of existing efforts and measures to boost transparency in the region,” said the office of the president in a statement.

The meeting is also expected to focus on ways to strengthening regional stability geared towards countering terrorism and address challenges surrounding regional Cooperation and integration.

In September 2018, Farmajo, Abiy and Afwerki signed a historic agreement in Asmara to cooperate in multiple frontiers, including security, peace and cross-border trade in the Horn of Africa countries.
