Turkish Deputy Defence Minister Musa Heybet in Mogadishu for Oil Vessel Welcome

ANKARA - Turkish Deputy Defence Minister arrived in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu to usher in an oil research vessel that is set to dock in the port of the Indian Ocean city within the next few hours.

The vessel, which was flagged off by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a few weeks ago, is set to conduct seismic surveys for oil and natural gas exploration off the Somali coast. Somalia's coastline is believed to be rich in hydrocarbons.

Abdirisaq Omar Mohamed, Somalia’s Minister for Petroleum and Minerals, ushered in the delegation ahead of the function. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had signed a deal with Turkey that would see Ankara explore the country's oil.

Also in the delegation is Somalia's ambassador to Turkey Fathudin Ospite, who had been championing collaboration between the two countries. The seismic survey will be carried out by the Turkish research ship Oruc Reis, which has been a key asset for Turkey since 2017.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, through X social media application, confirmed the deployment of the vessel, adding that it shall explore all within the designated areas along the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Somalia's coast is estimated to be about 3,333 kilometres.

Erdogan expressed optimism, stating that the region, long associated with conflict, "will now be recognized for economic development, prosperity, and peace following the Oruc Reis' discoveries."

Turkey is a close ally of Somalia and since 2011, the two countries have worked closely on social-economic transformation matters. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the country in 2011 and since then, he has been supporting in areas ranging from security to social-economic activities.

On Thursday, Abdirisaq Omar Mohamed conveyed his condolences to Deputy Minister Heybet for the Turkish citizens who lost their lives in a recent attack in Ankara. The attack left at least five people dead.

"The government and the people of Somalia fully share with Turkey the pain and sorrow caused by the attack," said Minister Abdirisaq Omar.

Turkey trains the elite GorGor troops in Somalia who are active in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants. The country has the largest foreign overseas military training school which is credited for huge successes in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
