Israeli Opposition to Bring Motion to Dissolve Parliament, Threatening Netanyahu’s Government

Israel’s opposition parties said Monday they will bring a motion to dissolve parliament to a vote on Wednesday, in what could be the most serious challenge yet to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition.

The move comes amid growing political unrest and public dissatisfaction over the government’s handling of key issues, including the ongoing genocide in Gaza and internal divisions over judicial reform.

Opposition leaders say they have been in talks with members of Netanyahu’s coalition to gather enough support to trigger early elections.

“This government has lost its legitimacy and the trust of the public,” opposition leader Yair Lapid said in a statement. “It’s time to let the people decide.”

Netanyahu’s Likud party has not yet commented on the planned motion.

The vote is expected to be a key test of Netanyahu’s hold on power, with several coalition lawmakers reportedly expressing discomfort with the government’s direction in recent weeks.

If the motion passes, it would lead to Israel’s sixth national election in just over five years.
