Serbia warns US-EU ties at ‘point of no return’ after troop withdrawal from Germany

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić warned that relations between the United States and the European Union have reached a “point of no return” following Washington’s decision to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.

Vučić said the move signals the start of a potential confrontation between the United States and Germany, Europe’s largest economy, and cautioned that tensions could escalate rapidly in the coming months.

“It is the beginning of a serious confrontation that may deepen quickly,” Vučić said, expressing concern over the broader geopolitical consequences for Europe.

The warning comes after the United States announced plans to pull about 5,000 troops from Germany as part of a broader reassessment of its military presence in Europe, a move that has unsettled key allies and raised questions about Washington’s long-term commitment to NATO.

According to a recent BBC News report, the planned withdrawal has sparked concern among European officials, who fear it could weaken collective defense structures and embolden rival powers.

Vučić said Serbia, which maintains military neutrality but has close ties with both the West and Russia, could be caught in the crossfire if tensions continue to rise.

“We are small, but we must be careful not to be drawn into conflicts between major powers,” he said.

Analysts say the decision underscores growing strains in transatlantic relations, driven by disagreements over defense spending, trade policies, and strategic priorities.
