WASHINGTON - Minnesota 5th District Representative Ilhan Omar has come into strong defense of her daughter Isra Hirsi, following her suspension from a top college in the United States, over her activism on social issues affecting the people.

On X (formerly Twitter), IIhan Omar said her daughter was on the right path, noting that her courage would potentially sharpen the world, adding that the social change movement will not be stopped just because she has been suspended from school.

"I am enormously proud of my daughter Hirsi She has always led with courage and compassion, from organizing a statewide school walkout on the 20th anniversary of Columbine at the age of 15 to leading the biggest youth climate rally at our nation’s Capitol at 16, and now pushing her school to stand against genocide," she said.

"Stepping up to change what you can’t tolerate is why we as a country have the right to speech, assembly, and petition enshrined in our constitution," added the 3rd term-serving legislator who is known for her defense of Muslims and the rights of minorities.

Last week, Hirsi announced that she had been suspended from Columbia University after participating in a pro-Palestinian protest on campus. She said that the institution had issues with her after arranging Columbia University Apartheid Divest, which is advocating for the university to divest from “companies complicit in genocide.”

“I just received notice that I am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide,” she wrote on Thursday morning.

“Those of us in Gaza Solidarity Encampment will not be intimidated. We will stand resolute until our demands are met,” she added.

Hirsi, a junior, said she had never previously been reprimanded or received any disciplinary warnings from Barnard during her time at the school. She has previously participated in her mother's political outings, including organizing campaigns across the country.
