Kyiv, Ukrain- In a demonstration of unity and respect, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took part in an Iftar meal alongside Muslim soldiers observing the holy month of Ramadan on Friday. He announced his intention to establish this event as an annual custom. Iftar is the evening meal that Muslims share to break their daily fast during Ramadan.

President Zelensky addressed the gathering, which included Crimean Tatar leaders from the Mejlis and Muslim clergy representatives. He conveyed his appreciation for the Muslim community and underscored that Ramadan is observed and valued across Ukraine, even in challenging situations such as on the front lines.

Following Russia's unprovoked incursion in February 2021, Ukraine has initiated multiple assaults on Russian-held positions in Crimea, a territory seized by Moscow in 2014 and presently under Russian administration. Zelensky has continually promised to recover Crimea, stressing that it is an essential component of the Ukrainian nation and its people.

The Ukrainian President also censured Russia's mistreatment of Muslims in Crimea during his address. He remarked that the subjugation efforts by Russia towards Ukraine and other European countries commenced with the annexation of Ukrainian Crimea and the ensuing persecution of Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, and Crimean Muslims. Zelensky asserted that liberating Crimea is imperative not only for Ukraine but for the global community as well.
