US judge limits review of documents seized from Ilhan Omar's home

WASHINGTON — A federal judge in Washington has restricted the US Justice Department's ability to review documents seized from the home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an investigation into allegations involving her immigration and citizenship records.

According to CNN, Judge Matthew Sharbo imposed conditions on the search warrant, requiring a special procedure to screen the seized materials and ensure investigators do not access documents related to Omar's legislative work.

Such records may be protected under the Speech or Debate Clause of the US Constitution, which provides lawmakers with protections against certain forms of legal scrutiny over their official legislative activities.

The Justice Department had sought broader authority to examine the seized documents, CNN reported. But the judge ruled that records connected to Omar's congressional duties could not be treated like ordinary evidence without additional safeguards.

The restrictions could complicate the federal investigation and potentially delay the review of the seized materials.

The investigation concerns allegations involving information in Omar's immigration and citizenship records dating back decades. Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the actions against her as politically motivated.

The judge's decision does not invalidate the search warrant or suspend the investigation. Instead, it limits how investigators can examine the documents to ensure that potentially protected legislative materials are handled appropriately.
