Will Trump receive the Nobel Peace Prize?
WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has been backed for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, with his recent remarks about the Horn of Africa exciting Somaliland leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, alias Irro, who is pushing for the recognition of the region.
Irro, who won the presidency last year, praised Donald Trump for his commitment towards the resolution of global conflicts, including his active participation in peace and stability within the Horn of Africa since his return to power.
Although Trump gave a slight indication of Somaliland’s quest for statehood, the US has remained firm on supporting a single Somali policy, arguing that the region is part and parcel of Somalia — a position firmly held by the Federal Government of Somalia.
“I thank the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who dared to bring the issue of Somaliland to his table – something his predecessors did not dare to discuss,” said President Irro. “I cannot do more in return than to add my voice in support of his candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is trying to end wars across the world – from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond.”
Somaliland has been pushing for its recognition, but most countries around the world still support the single Somalia policy. Somalia fell out with Ethiopia recently after Addis Ababa tried to sign a secret pact on access to the sea with Hargeisa.
Irro welcomed an open letter from US Senator Ted Cruz addressed to Mr. Trump and applauded Congressman Scott Perry for introducing the Somaliland Recognition Act in the US House of Representatives.
“These calls from US legislators have angered our adversaries,” Irro said, reiterating that Somaliland would not return to union with Somalia.
Trump has actively participated in pushing for peace deals around the world, including Ukraine and Russia, but he has been criticised for his selective opinions about the Israeli and Palestinian war, which has left thousands of people dead.
