AU Backs France’s Two-State Proposal to End Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
ADDIS ABABA - The African Union (AU) has endorsed the suggestions by France to have a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestine conflict, arguing that the approach will end the hostility in Gaza and West Bank.
This comes after French President Emmanuel Macron regretted the ongoing fighting in Gaza, leading to extreme humanitarian conditions with thousands of innocent people feared dead throughout the conflict, which is entering its third year.
Mohamed Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, stated that the declaration aligns with the AU's long-held position on a two-state solution, which was reaffirmed in February 2025 during the 8th ordinary session.
The session reiterated the continent’s collective commitment to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of a state.
Describing the announcement as a “significant step,” the Chairperson emphasized that it contributes to advancing a just, lasting, and comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Youssouf also reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering support for a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine exist side by side in peace and security. He further encouraged other nations to follow suit in supporting the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Several African countries have called for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need for a cessation of hostilities in the Middle East. The Israeli state has continued with an endless bombardment of innocent civilians despite calls for a ceasefire.
Palestinian people also got huge support from the Arab League of Nations and, most recently, England, which demanded an immediate ceasefire and subsequent recognition of the Palestinian state. The issue shall he canvassed at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.
