ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Drone strikes hit two towns and one district in the central zone of Ethiopia’s Tigray region late Friday and early Saturday, killing one person and wounding another, according to local police and information obtained by the BBC.

The fatal strike occurred in the town of Entcho, where one civilian was killed and another injured, police told BBC Tigrinya. The attack came amid reports of renewed clashes between federal government forces and Tigray forces.

Police and other local sources said the drone strikes targeted Entcho and Gendebeta towns, as well as Ahferom district. In Entcho and Gendebeta, the drones reportedly struck vehicles.

Entcho police chief Tesfay Amare said two vehicles inside the town were hit in a drone attack that took place between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday.

The town’s communications office posted images on Facebook showing two cargo trucks damaged in the strike. One of the trucks appeared to have sustained damage to its rear section, with part of its tarpaulin-covered load torn open. Green bananas were clearly visible spilling from the exposed cargo area.

There was no immediate comment from the Ethiopian federal government on the reported strikes.
