Kenyan President William Ruto Says Border With Somalia Will Remain Closed

NAIROBI — Kenyan President William Ruto has said that the border between Kenya and Somalia will not be reopened at this time, citing regional security concerns, Somalia's ongoing political challenges, and funding constraints affecting security operations.

Ruto said the decision was driven by the prevailing security situation in the region, as well as political uncertainties in Somalia and difficulties related to financing security measures necessary for the safe management of cross-border movement.

The Kenya-Somalia border has been subject to periodic restrictions in recent years due to security threats, particularly concerns over militant activities and cross-border attacks.

The Kenyan president's remarks come as both countries continue to cooperate on security and regional stability issues while facing shared challenges in the Horn of Africa.
