US Senator Chris Coons Visits Kenya for Talks with Politicians at the Height of Political Tension
NAIROBI, Kenya - US Senator Chris Coons arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday for talks with Kenyan politicians, marking his second visit to the country in under a year. The Senator, who is a close ally of US President Joe Biden, is expected to discuss various issues related to trade, security, and democracy, among other key areas of mutual interest.
During his visit, Mr. Coons met with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his office on Wednesday morning. Mr. Gachagua tweeted about the meeting, stating that the discussions were aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
This visit comes at a time when demonstrations against the Kenyan government are happening in the country, especially in the capital city of Nairobi and other cities such as Kisumu, the stronghold of opposition leader Raila Odinga. It remains unclear whether Senator Coons will address the ongoing political tensions in Kenya during his talks with Kenyan leaders.
This is not the first time that Senator Coons has visited Kenya. In August 2022, he led a congressional delegation to the country where they met with national leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. They also met with officials from the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement Party.
Senator Coons' visit to Kenya highlights the importance of the relationship between the United States and Kenya. It also demonstrates the United States' continued interest in promoting democracy and economic development in the country and the Horn of Africa region.
