Efforts underway to resolve political tensions in Somalia's Puntland

GAROWE, Somalia - Former Puntland president and Somali PM have arrived in Garowe, the capital of the state, following electoral conflict which threatened unity and peaceful coexistence of locals, in the country's most stable region..

Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke and Abdiweli Gaas said their trip is part of efforts to solve current standoff following a shambolic local election. Also, the alleged plot by President Said Abdullahi Deni to extend his term is likely to feature in the subsequent meetings.

So dire was the electoral conflict that at least 20 people were killed recently when rival forces clashes in Garowe, leading to condemnation from members of the international community. Despite the fierce resistance from the opposition, Puntland assembly went on to approve proposals for constitutional amendments, hightening the tension.

The two former leaders joined traditional elders who are making mediation, with an aim of fostering peace and stability. The conflicting sides were urged to embrace dialogue instead of war.

Sharmarke, ex-PM who had previously called for dialogue, exuded confidence in the team noting that there are indications a truce would be reached. "We are committed to resolving this impasse. The initial election was conducted commendably, and we hope the remaining issues will be resolved satisfactorily."

Previously, both Sharmarke and Abdiweli Gaas have opposed plans for term extension perpetuated by Said Abdullahi Deni, who has been under pressure to quit. The two leaders recently insisted that any constitutional amendment by Deni could lead to anarchy in the northeastern state of Somalia.

A disputed local election was held in Puntland in May this year and President Deni was accused of pre-rigging in favour of his KAAH party. However, despite the confrontations, the electoral commission went on to conduct the elections against the will of the people.

But the elections were not held in some areas, including parts of Nugaal region which hosts the capital Garowe, in what forced the commission to schedule the polls for a later date, probably after consensus. Political pundits insist Deni is hell-bent to undermine the constitution by extending his term illegally.

The opposition loudly called for a transparent, inclusive, free and fair election in January 2024 and warned Deni against illegal term extension, which could put Puntland at risk of sliding into political instability and conflict.
