BOSASO, Somalia - Puntland security forces, with assistance from international coalition partners, launched a series of airstrikes late Wednesday night aimed at dismantling Islamic State (ISIS) positions in rugged terrains surrounding the Isku-Shuban district in the Bari region, local security officials reported.

The strikes, which took place under the cover of darkness, were described by sources as a significant blow to the militant group's operations in the area. They reportedly led to the obliteration of several key ISIS bases nestled in the valleys and mountains, significantly disrupting their activities.

While the exact impact of the military actions remains undisclosed, with no official casualty figures or detailed damage assessments released by Puntland's military command, local sources suggest that the operation was successful in neutralizing an unspecified number of insurgents.

The operation underscores the ongoing collaboration between Puntland's forces and international allies in combating the spread of ISIS in this part of Somalia. The airstrike is part of a ground offensive launched recently by Puntland to eliminate ISIS and Al-Shabaab from the entire Bari region.

Last month, Puntland forces at the Dharjaalle base repulsed an attack after engaging with and killing 8 ISIS militants, with no Somalis among the deceased, highlighting the international composition of the group's fighters in the Bari region's hills.

Efforts to reach Puntland military spokespersons for further comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The international coalition involved in the operation has also not issued any public statements regarding their participation or the outcomes.

This latest military action adds to the complex security landscape in Somalia, where multiple factions and foreign fighters continue to challenge the stability of the region. The focus on ISIS in Puntland indicates a strategic shift in targeting, aiming to curb the group's influence before it can further entrench itself.
