GAROWE, Somalia — Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni on Tuesday met with the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador James Swan, and his accompanying delegation in the regional capital, Garowe.

The meeting, which was also attended by members of the Puntland Council of Ministers, focused on Somalia’s overall situation, with particular emphasis on security, politics, and humanitarian affairs.

Discussions included the ongoing anti-terrorism operation in the Calmiskaad region, where Puntland security forces have been conducting efforts to eliminate extremist groups. The U.N. delegation commended the Puntland administration for its commitment to counterterrorism and its progress in restoring stability in the region.

The meeting comes amid growing political tensions in Somalia over the upcoming 2026 elections and recent constitutional amendments introduced by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Puntland has previously voiced concerns over the centralization of power and the lack of consensus surrounding the constitutional process.

President Deni expressed appreciation for the United Nations’ continued support and highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation in promoting peace, governance, and humanitarian assistance across Somalia.
