MOGADISHU, Somalia- The outgoing Federal MP and second Deputy Parliament Speaker Mahad Abdalla Awad, was elected as a lawmaker in the parliamentary elections in Mogadishu on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

According to the ballot results, Awad retained his seat after defeating his rival contender, Hassan Mohamed Nur, in majority 50 votes in the Lower House election for candidates representing Somaliland clans in the Federal Parliament.

"Today, I'm very glad to be elected again as a lawmaker in the Federal Parliament," said Awad during a speech following his victory.

The security was beefed up in Mogadishu on Wednesday ahead of the voting sessions for candidates hailing from Banadir region and Somaliland.

Since the start of the Lower House elections in early November, up to 175 lawmakers out of 275 seats have been elected, whereas 37 of the elected MPs are women.

The Somali presidential election was scheduled to take place in November 30, but has been postponed for the third time due to the slow progress of the Lower House voting in the regional states.
