GAROWE, Somalia - Puntland's Environment and Climate Change Minister, Mohamed Abdirahman, has raised concerns over the region's heavy dependence on firewood and charcoal for energy, which accounts for 85% of its energy consumption. This reliance is contributing to significant deforestation and environmental damage.

In a statement, Minister Mohamed Abdirahman urged a shift towards solar energy, highlighting the critical need for sustainable solutions. "Our forests are rapidly disappearing due to our current energy practices. We must pivot towards solar energy not only to save our forests but also to ensure Puntland's sustainable future," he said.

"As Minister of Environment, Range & Climate Change, I am deeply concerned that 85% of Puntland’s energy comes from firewood & charcoal. This reliance depletes our forests and harms the environment. Low gas usage (9%) is due to high costs, international price fluctuations, and lack of proper facilities. We must urgently invest in affordable, sustainable alternatives such as solar energy while supporting the transition for those in the firewood & charcoal trade with new income opportunities. Our ministry is committed to addressing these challenges and reducing reliance on unsustainable energy sources," said the minister.

The minister's urgent call is part of ongoing environmental policy discussions in Puntland, reflecting a broader commitment to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. He advocates for local and international investment in solar power infrastructure to lessen the dependency on biomass, pointing out the economic benefits of reducing reliance on fluctuating alternative fuel costs, such as gas.

This push towards renewable energy aligns with global sustainability efforts but faces implementation challenges due to the high initial setup costs and the need for significant technological upgrades in an area accustomed to traditional energy sources.
