​Somalia: AMISOM convoy targeted in landmine explosion near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia- A roadside bomb has ripped through a military convoy ferrying African Union soldiers in the outskirts of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Monday morning, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking to GO, a witness said the Improvised explosive device (IED) struck one of the armored vehicles in the convoy as it was driving on the main highway linking the capital to Afgoye district.

There was no immediate confirmation of the casualties as result of the landmine blast, but reports indicated that AU soldiers have fired randomly at a nearby crowd, killing at least a pedestrian woman.

“A remote controlled landmine struck AMISOM convoy at Arbacow area as it was traveling from Mogadishu to Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region. I can’t confirm the casualties on soldiers,” said the witness.

AMISOM is yet to comment on the bomb attack, which was the latest in series of IED explosions targeting Somali and AU forces in the street between Mogadishu and Afgoye over the past few weeks.

Al-Shabaab has lost key urban strongholds in south and central Somalia, including Mogadishu to SNA and AMISOM since 2011, however, the Militant group still capable of launching sporadic raids in the country.
