GALKAYO, Somalia, November 22, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Details are emerging about deadly fighting in central Somalia town of Galkayo, where at least ten people were reportedly killed in armed confrontations on Sunday morning, Garowe Online reports.

Our correspondent says, at least 50 people are being treated at medical facilities in the restive city according to former Galmudug Mudug Governor and Galkayo General Hospital Director.

Two deaths have so far been independently confirmed to Garowe Online, both from the fighters

Puntland Paramilitary Unit commander, Abdirashid Hashi Gabi-Gabi told the media that they are positioned at border between vast north and Galmudug-controlled Barahley neighborhood.

The fierce gun-battle has taken toll on civilians after stray bullets penetrated into schools and neighborhoods.

Traditional leaders and intellectuals are calling for immediate cessation of the conflict.

Nevertheless, Galkayo Mayor, Abdiasis Jama Nugal conditioned hopes for calm on end to a barrage of mortar rounds landing onto northern built-up areas.

Galmudug accuses Puntland of encroachment

Galmudug Security Minister, Osman Isse Nur has accused Puntland of encroaching into their territories to put anti-militant push in central Somalia in jeopardy.

“At 12:00 in the morning, Puntland forces attacked Galmudug for land grab and to impede our efforts of battling Al Shabaab [militants],” Galmudug security minister told Mogadishu-based stations.

Nur disclosed that the clashes left two Galmudug soldiers wounded, and would hand over two wounded Puntland soldiers in their hand.

Galkayo is a precarious hotspot which has been a flashpoint for recurrent territorial disputes since 1993, when local clans assented to peace pact.
