Somalia: Meeting held to modernize Garowe Airport

GAROWE, Puntland- A fundraising event was hosted at Puntland Development and Research Center (PDRC) on Saturday, attended by Senator and Presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, government officials, clan elders, representatives from various companies and members of the civil society to support further improvement projects for Garowe International Airport, Garowe Online reports.

The meeting convened in Garowe city, to support the community-led proposed Runway Lighting project to enable the Airport to operate night flights similar to all international Airports.

The Turkish-based company SMK Group, which currently constructing the runway for Garowe Airport, has presented the projected costs close to $ 700,000 for the lighting project for the Airport.

In the meeting, Puntland Aviation Minister, Hasan Haji Saed, has reiterated government commitment to modernize the Airports and ensured that the project will be implemented as intended.

Mayor of Garowe city, Hasan Mohamed Isse “Goodir” on his side, praised the event and supported the efforts to develop the Airport. Businessmen and representatives of the companies have ensured support for the project and pledged financial support for the lighting project.

Former Puntland President and Senator Farole, has urged businessmen, companies and Puntland community to collectively take part in the efforts to develop the Airport, as he stated the lighting project is easy to be implemented at early stages before the runway pavement project is completed.  

On the other hand, a joint committee comprised of government officials and businessmen was announced to follow up on the progress to raise the required finanical budget for the proposed project. 

The first phase of the runway pavement project is at final stage and is expected to be completed at the beginning of next year.
