MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalis are world-renowned as innovators, athletes, entrepreneurs, artists, and traders. However, the long decade of civil war halted the country’s full potential of becoming the epicenter of world-class education within the Horn of Africa.

But this lost glory is slowly being re-energized by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation. Hormuud Salaam Foundation is the subsidiary arm of the Hormuud Telecommunication company-Somalia’s biggest telecommunication firm.

The foundation is set to reward a total of 400 students who finished high school fulfilled the eligibility requirements and took part in today's yearly HSF scholarship examination.

This scholarship scheme was established by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation in 2019 to help students who are unable to pay their university fees due to financial hardship in pursuing further education at a higher level.

A link, which was shared on the foundation's social media accounts channels last Saturday, allowed students from all over the country to apply for the scholarship and take part in today’s exam. The thirty students with the highest scores will be selected and receive full scholarship grants.

Abdullahi Nur Osman, Chairman of the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, addressed the students during the examination, explaining that an independent committee would meticulously review the exams, and the deserving winners would get full scholarships and the freedom to apply to any university in the country. Mr. Osman further highlighted the invaluable nature of the scholarship, made possible through the generous sponsorship of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank, as it opens doors for high school graduates who might otherwise be unable to afford the costs of higher education.

Hormuud Telecom's CCO, Abdirashiid Ali Ainashe, who was present, expressed his company's delight at the success of the HSF scholarship program, which has reached its fifth consecutive year with the first batch of scholarships graduating this year. In his statement, he expressed the company’s delight for the opportunity to contribute to the education of Somalia's youth and extended his heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated leadership team behind the Hormuud Salaam Foundation.

Ismail Yusuf Osman, the Director of the Higher Education Department at the Ministry of Education who also attended the launch of this year's HSF scholarship, commended the transparent and fair manner in which the Hormuud Salaam Foundation conducted the scholarship examination. Furthermore, Director Ismail earnestly urged other companies to follow the inspiring example set by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation and create similar opportunities for Somali youth. With genuine sincerity, he encouraged the participating students to seize this valuable opportunity and wished them abundant success in their academic endeavors.

With a steadfast commitment to nurturing home-grown talent and fostering a peaceful and prosperous society, Hormuud Salaam Foundation places great emphasis on education programs and acknowledges the immeasurable value of investing in Somalia's youth. The foundation envisions a future where these deserving students blossom into productive members of society, contributing their skills and knowledge to the betterment of their homeland.

Globally education plays a critical role in nurturing future leaders of any society, hence this initiative by Hormuud Salaam Foundation will go a long way in shaping the future of Somalia.

World Bank data reveals that Somalia just like any other country within the Horn of Africa has one of the youngest populations.

Without education, this age group might not be able to participate in nation-building but with education, the country’s future will be in safe hands.
