MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) made significant gains against the Al-Shabab militants over the weekend,  with the group registering yet another vital victory against the militants in southern Somalia,  where the Al-Qaeda-linked network has been dominant.

According to the state media, at least 30 Al-Shabab members were executed by the Somali National Army with assistance from the Jubaland regional force within Jamaame town within the Lower Jubba region. The incident took place near River Jubba.

The operations also captured 10 militants who were involved in public disruptions in the Bar Sanguuni area and killed more others, as confirmed by officials to the state media. At Bar Sanguuni,  at least 19 Al-Shabab militants were killed, marking a major milestone in the fight against the militants.

The Somali National Army is accelerating the offensive operations against the Al-Shabaab militants in all the areas in Jubbaland and all areas of the country. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared total war against al-Shabaab militants,  leading to countrywide operations against the militants.

At least 3000 Al-Shabaab operatives were killed during the first phase of operations against the group, which covered Hirshabelle and Galgadug states. The second phase of operations against the al-Shabab will be conducted in Jubaland and Southwest states.

Besides military operations,  the government has also invested in tracking and locating the group's sources of funding,  including closing down 250 bank accounts and 70 mobile money transfer firms, which are linked to funding the militants.

Also, the government has closed down websites and social media groups that are linked to Alshabab militants. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud maintains that by December 2024, the group would have made significant losses in the country as the Somali National Army took over security responsibilities.
