MANDERE, Kenya - The Al-Shabaab militants reportedly targeted the Special Operations Group police officers in the northeastern part of the country, security sources said, without revealing much about the incident, which is under investigation.

The militants targeted the Special Operations Group in Guba in northeastern Kenya, but the alert security teams fought them. Casualties still remain unknown but reports indicate the militants suffered immense losses.

For months, the Special Operations Group contingent of the Kenya Police has been working closely with the Kenya Defence Forces along the Kenya-Somalia border. The elite officers have managed to push Al-Shabaab further, killing hundreds of them in the process.

Kenya's administration is cautious when making decisions related to National Security given that the al-Shabaab has traditionally attacked innocent civilians and security teams. In the past three weeks, 56 enemy maneuvers were reported in the region.

Across the border, the KDF team has been working closely with the Somali National Army who are set to take over security responsibilities. The al-Shabaab has lost significant territories according to the federal government of Somalia.

The incident comes hours after Kenya's President William Ruto sacked his entire cabinet, only retaining the Minister for Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi. Interior and National Administration Minister Kithure Kindiki and his Defence counterpart Aden Duale were affected.

The two ministers have been central in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants since their appointment in 2022. President William Ruto hinted at forming a 'broad-based cabinet ', a move which could see opposition figures joining the government as he struggles to settle down in the wake of violent protests.
