Arab Parliament welcomes confirmation of Hamza as new PM of Somalia

CAIRO - The Confirmation of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has continued to elicit excitement from several quarters around the world, with stakeholders terming him the best man suited for the job, having been approved as the 21st PM of the Horn of Africa nation.

In a bipartisan approach, MPs approved the Prime Minister, who immediately took over from Mohamed Hussein Roble, the man credited for pushing for reforms in the country. Roble even had to differ with former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo for elections to be conducted.

Hon. Mr. Adel Bin Abdul Rahman AlAsoomi, the president of the Arab League parliament, welcomed the approval while calling him to exercise his duties within jurisdictions set by the laws of Somalia. He said he doesn't have doubt about the 48-year-old politician.

The President of the Arab Parliament expressed his sincere appreciation for the great trust that “Barre” received from the Somali House of the People, adding that this is a confirmation of the expertise and high efficiency he enjoys.

Somalia is a member of the Arab League and has been a major beneficiary of the 22 countries, especially on matters humanitarian front. The countries have also been supporting the country to deal with insecurity, especially in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Further, he affirmed the AP’s support and standing by Somalia to cross this delicate phase and to consolidate its steps towards the security and stability of its people and its aspiration for a decent life, stressing that Somalia needs a government of capabilities to contribute to addressing all the challenges.

The United Nations has warned that the current drought in the country risks affecting the lives of millions of people in the country. Already, over 800,000 people have reportedly been displaced from their homes in search of food, with most ending up in IDP camps.

Barre has pledged to work closely with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to tackle challenges affecting the country. The PM comes from Jubaland, a state which was always at loggerheads with former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed better known as Farmajo.

The US has also welcomed the confirmation of the new PM.
