FIFA Chief Says Somali Referee's U.S. Entry Denial 'Unfortunate' but Beyond Body's Authority
MOGADISHU, Somalia – FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the treatment of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was "unfortunate" but stressed that world football's governing body had no authority to intervene in decisions taken by governments or security agencies.
Speaking at a press conference, Infantino said FIFA was seeking to address the situation through dialogue and diplomatic engagement following reports that the internationally recognised Somali referee had been denied entry to the United States.
"It is unfortunate what happened to Omar, the referee from Somalia," Infantino said. "We always try to resolve situations like these. We will discuss it, we will contact the relevant parties, and we will see what is possible."
The FIFA chief said the organisation consistently works behind the scenes to find solutions to problems affecting football officials and players, while cautioning that public outcry does not always help bring about a swift resolution.
"Sometimes immediate alarm does not necessarily make it easier to solve these issues," he said, adding that FIFA remained committed to exploring all possible avenues to assist.
Infantino underscored the limits of FIFA's authority, noting that the organisation could not overrule sovereign decisions made by states.
"We are not kings of the world who can give orders to governments and police forces," he said. "We are a sports organisation, and we do everything within our power."
Artan, one of Somalia's most prominent sporting figures and the recipient of the 2025 CAF Referee of the Year award, has become the focus of widespread attention in Somalia after being refused entry to the United States despite diplomatic efforts by the Somali government to facilitate his travel.
The case has prompted expressions of solidarity from Somali officials, sports bodies and members of the public, while calls continue for further clarification from the relevant authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision.
