​Former PM called Somali President to step down

Mogadishu, Somali - Opposition Presidential candidates declared Somali President Hasan Shaikh leadership illegitimate when his term expires on 10 September, Garowe online reports.

During a press conference held in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Friday, former Prime Minister Abdiwali Shiekh Ahmed and other presidential candidates have urged Somali President to step down from Office. 

" President's term ended and there is no legal process granted him term extension, he must hand over power and leave Villa Somalia. The President should peacefully leave office to avoid constitutional crisis in the country," said the former PM.

The move comes amid Somali leaders politicians are gathering in Mogadishu to conclude an inclusive roadmap for the upcoming Presidential election scheduled October 30.

Opposition candidates said the National Leadership Forum Conference is unconstitutional, describing it a move to stall the Somali election while holding on to power illegitimately.

Somali President was elected in the 2012 Presidential elections, facing pressure from the opposition candidates as his term in office ends in 10 September.
