MOGADISHU, Somalia — Ahmed Yusuf, a visionary and one of the founding fathers of Hormuud Telecom, has recounted his path from a nomadic camel herder to becoming the pioneering CEO of Somalia's premier telecommunications company in an interview with The Developing Telecoms. His journey, marked by war, displacement, and a bold return to help rebuild his war-torn nation, is a testament to entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.

"I constantly remind my team to remain humble as our efforts are not just about financial growth, but about reconnecting our society and leveraging technology for greater benefits," Yusuf said, emphasizing his commitment to social impact.

Despite lacking a formal telecom background, Yusuf's self-education and hands-on experience, supplemented by a management diploma from the UK, enabled him to master the complexities of the telecommunications sector. "I learned telecom intricacies by doing, with invaluable support from my colleagues," he explained, highlighting his practical approach to mastering the sector.

He discussed Hormuud's pivotal role in launching mobile money services, a move that countered the widespread issue of counterfeit currency in Somalia. "We made this service free to use, making transactions safer and more reliable," Yusuf noted, underscoring the service's contribution to economic stability.

Yusuf's initial drive to establish Hormuud was rooted in a desire to enhance communication across Somalia. "During the health crisis, we turned ringtones into public health messages, ensuring critical information reached everyone," he stated, demonstrating the company's community-centric initiatives.

Yusuf reflects on his achievements, defining success by reaching the most isolated communities. Hormuud's humanitarian platform has facilitated aid for over 3.5 million individuals, showcasing a deep commitment to empowerment through technology.

Looking ahead, Yusuf envisions Hormuud as a catalyst for sustainable development in Somalia, with plans to expand digital inclusivity and environmental initiatives. "I aim for Hormuud to redefine success in Somalia, challenging the negative perceptions," Yusuf concluded.

The tale of Ahmed Yusuf from herder to telecommunications mogul not only illustrates his personal success but also the potential of technology to transform societies amidst adversity.
