Hormuud Salaam Foundation Delivers Ramadan Aid to Prisoners and War Veterans in Mogadishu on Sunday, February 22, 2026

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Hormuud Salaam Foundation [HSF] has distributed food, clothing and financial assistance to inmates at the Mogadishu Central Prison and to disabled Somali National Army veterans, as part of its annual Ramadan Aid programme.

The foundation,  the humanitarian arm of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank, began its activities with a visit to the Mogadishu Central Prison on Sunday, where the HSF officials handed over essential supplies intended to improve the welfare of prisoners. The donation included five camels and assorted food items such as flour, rice, sugar, milk, dates, and cooking oil, along with new clothes for inmates to wear during the upcoming Eid celebrations.

The wide range of aid was formally received by the Minister of Justice and Constitution of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Moalim Mohamud, alongside prison commander Brigadier General Dahir Abdulle Rage. Both officials expressed appreciation for the continued support extended to prisoners.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the chairman of the foundation, Abdullahi Nur Osman, outlined the organisation’s humanitarian mission to assist vulnerable communities, noting that this year’s donation was specifically aimed at ensuring inmates could observe Eid with dignity.

“We are committed to standing with the most vulnerable in our society, and this means ensuring that prisoners and injured veterans are not forgotten, especially during Ramadan, a time of compassion and generosity,” added Osman.

Brig. Gen. Dahir Abdulle Rage commended the foundation for its timely contribution, emphasising the positive impact such support has on prisoner morale and living conditions. Minister Hassan Moalim Mohamud also praised the initiative, highlighting the foundation’s consistent role in supporting inmates year after year.

In a separate outreach effort, the foundation visited disabled members of the Somali National Army residing in the Martini Hospital area. These veterans, many of whom sustained injuries during the 1977-1978 war between Somalia and Ethiopia, received assistance, including a camel, financial support, dates, and wheelchairs for those with mobility challenges.

Abdullahi Nor Osman explained that the support was intended to ease the daily hardships faced by the injured veterans, many of whom continue to live with long-term disabilities.

The chairman of the veterans residing in the Martini area, Abdullahi Farah Shuriye, expressed gratitude to the foundation, noting that it has consistently stood by them, particularly during the month of Ramadan.

Several beneficiaries also voiced their appreciation, underscoring the importance of such initiatives in addressing both immediate needs and long-standing challenges faced by marginalized groups.

The foundation’s dual outreach underscores a broader commitment to social responsibility, bringing relief to some of the most vulnerable members of society while reinforcing a message of compassion and community support.

The foundation said the intervention forms part of its Ramadan Iftar and vulnerable support initiative, now in its 14th year, which has reached more than 67,000 beneficiaries, including patients, prisoners, refugees,s and people with disabilities.
