MOGADISHU, Somalia - A few days after the cabinet changes, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) welcomed the new minister of foreign affairs for the Republic of Somalia, who takes over amid rising insecurity incidents and diplomatic missteps of the country.

Abdisalam Abdi Ali took over from Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who was shifted to defence by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. He is set to set to solve several diplomatic issues, including strained relationships with member states.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD executive secretary, expressed his confidence in the new team, noting that the Authority shall work closely with Somalia on matters of security and economic development while focusing on the elimination of the al-Shabaab militants.

“We look forward to working closely with Abdisalam Abdi Ali to advance our shared goals of peace, security, and integration in the Horn of Africa,” said Dr. Gebeyehu in a statement.

Abdisalam Abdi Ali served as the Deputy Prime Minister. The changes are intended to handle the intricate issues of security and defense, given the recent al-Shabaab gains within the country, inflicting setbacks on the security forces.

Dr. Gebeyehu also paid tribute to the outgoing Foreign Minister, hailing Fiqi’s role in strengthening Somalia’s diplomatic engagement within IGAD. Fiqi is a confidant of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and a supporter of Somali nationalism.

“His commitment and leadership were instrumental during a critical time for regional diplomacy,” he said, while wishing Fiqi success in his new portfolio.

IGAD is a major security and development partner of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which is fighting for stability. The Somali government has invested in the fight against Shabaab, but the group has yet to surrender in most parts of the central and southern regions.
